Elounda and The Surrounding Area

Albion House is located on the edge of the small village of Pano Elounda, which forms part of the community of Elounda. Pano Elounda has been designated a 'European Heritage Site' and work is under way to remove the more obvious signs of modern life, returning the village to how it might have looked at the beginning of the 20th century.

Pano Elounda, along with the lower village of Kato Elounda, form the oldest settlements of Elounda and its great age is reflected in its narrow winding streets and charming old stone houses. There are three 'kafenions' or cafes in the village - one of which is just next door, where Maria will make you the cheapest and best Greek coffee in town!

Some thirty minutes walk down the 'donkey' track will bring you into Elounda itself - a picturesque fishing port with a wealth of shops, restaurants and bars. Here you will find everything from pottery to lace, raki to jewellery. Boats leave the harbour regularly for the nearby island fortress of Spinalonga (setting for Victoria Hislop's best selling novel, 'The Island'.) On Friday mornings the town is full of bustle and life with its street market held in front of the main church. Greek evenings, festivals, open-air concerts and Saint's Day celebrations mean that there is something to see and do whatever your interest.

Elounda is part of the district of Lassithi, an area rich in history and ever changing scenery. For those who wish to learn more about the area, specialised day and half-days trips are available, visiting sites of special and unique interest. These sites are well off the main tourist routes and may involve some off-roading. Flower walks (including orchids and wild Cretan herbs), cookery courses and demonstrations, watercolour painting and botanical drawings are just some of the options. The sacred shrine of the Goddess with the Upraised Hands is also just a short drive into the Thripti Mountains.
